15 Minutes - Easy Ways to Remember Birds: We'll cover a number of methods you can use to help familiarize yourself with birds including everything from field guide use and bird taxonomy to using shapes, features, colors, habitat and behavior.
15 Minutes - Bird Vocalizations: We'll learn about different vocalizations birds use to communicate, how those sounds relate to various behaviors and the usefulness of this knowledge when we're out in nature. We'll also listen to various songs and calls and use a computer program to visualize those sounds as spectrograms and waveforms. Check out Wolf Journey Book III if you would like to prepare in advance.
15 Minutes - Awareness Skills: If you want to find a little brown bird in a big brown forest you need to practice using your fox walk, owl eyes and deer ears – we'll teach you how. And if you already know then more practice will make you even better!
60 Minutes - Bird Walk: We'll put theory to practice and head out on a mini-expedition to see how many birds we can find, who they are and what they're up to using our field guides and the information we just learned.
15 Minutes - Owl Calls: We'll put the theory of bird vocalizations to the test during our walk back.
Bird Regulations: We'll briefly discuss the protection available to birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and how they impact you as a nature enthusiast.
After class: Feel free to stay to ask questions about anything we talked about today, birds we saw or heard while on our walk or any other bird-related information you're curious about. Email or Call us at any time with any questions and requests.
